Kia Seltos vs Hyundai Creta 2020, and why I took the Seltos over the Creta

WHY SELTOS IS BETTER THAN CRETA 2020

I own a Kia Seltos GTX+ (1.5D-AT) and the following are my observations and my reasons to choose the Kia Seltos over the Hyundai Creta. We had time to cancel the booking but conveniently before delivery, the brochure of the Creta was leaked and upon a thorough study, I decided to stick to my decision, that is, to go ahead with the Kia. We got it delivered last week and have driven around 750km's as of now and its been a wonderful journey so far.

In this blog, I will be comparing both the cars (top variants) with respect to my perspective. But this could also help you to make a decision if you are confused between these two cars. First, let's check the similarities then the advantages of both cars on each other and finally my reason to choose the Kia Seltos over the Hyundai Creta 2020.

SIMILARITIES

(While comparing the fully-loaded variants of both in terms of features)

  1. Use of the exact same platform and use similar percentages of HSS (Hige Strenght Steel) with Creta having a bit higher at 74.3% and Seltos having 73%. They both have the same safety packages and safety features.
  2. Similar overall size (Seltos is actually 15mm longer, 10mm wider and 10mm taller than the new Creta). They do share the exact same wheelbase at 2610mm and have the same fuel tank capacity at 50 liters.
  3. Both use the same touchscreens at 10.25 inches with slightly different software. Both use the exact same Bose Speakers sound system with 400W of overall output from the 5 speakers, 2 tweeters and 1 sub, and it has an amplifier.
  4. Same engines with the exact same power and torque figures
  5. Same gearbox combos (No manual option for the 1.4l TDI Petrol in the Creta)

    DIFFERENCES

Advantages of Kia Seltos over the Hyundai Creta

    1. 360-degree all-round camera - This could be the most underrated thing in the Kia Seltos. It makes parking so easy that we almost never feel challenged in a difficult parking situation. I seriously wonder why Hyundai decided to omit this feature for the Creta.
    2. Blind-view Monitoring system - This is a feature that is made possible with the 360-degree camera system. Along with giving a view of both sides while lane changing, we are also assisted while stopping the vehicle at the side of a road with engaging the side indicators.
    3. HUD (Heads Up Display) - This is something that most people feel like its an overrated feature but drive the car with the HUD on and then you will realize the level of convenience it gives you. There is no need for us to look down at the instrument cluster to check the speed or to look at the touchscreen to check for navigational details. We can even change the color, size, angle of the information that is available in the HUD (Neat!).
    4. Manual Gearbox for the 1.4L TDI - The most powerful engine in Kia's lineup, the 1.4L Turbo Petrol comes with a manual option. This is a big plus for those who love manual shifters as it gives the driver full control over the engine without any restrictions. Personally speaking, I prefer manuals over any Automatic Transmissions, period.
    5. That Design - Well, this is a part where neither I nor anyone can give a general opinion on. But I have not met a person who said that the all-new Creta has a decent design. But on the other hand, almost everyone I had a chat about the Seltos is a fan of its design. In my opinion, there is no competition here, the Seltos is just simply a better-looking car. I mean just check these pics out.

         6. The Little things that matter
    • Front Parking Sensors with Front Camera (Creta neither has sensors nor a camera)
    • Rear seat Centre headrest (Creta doesn't offer)
    • Telescopic adjustment for the Steering wheel (Only Tilt adjustment in Creta)
    • LED Fog lights (Creta has halogen fog lamps which are contrasting to the headlights)

Advantages of Hyundai Creta over the Kia Seltos

    1. Panoramic Sunroof - We Indians are simply mad about sunroofs and Hyundai with the addition of a panoramic sunroof has fulfilled the wishes of many. Even though a sunroof doesn't really give any additional benefit (but could cause a handful of issues) its a great thing for a vehicle since it attracts a lot of customers. (The Seltos has a normal sunroof)
    2. Paddle Shifters - This should be the biggest plus for the Hyundai counterpart. This takes sportiness to the next level and is something I wish Kia provided on the Seltos.
    3. MT Remote Engine Start - This is something that could be really useful as we can manually start the car and set the temperature inside the cabin before getting into the car on a hot sunny day. This is something that's mostly seen in AT cars.
    4. Electric Park Break - The benefit I see from this is the extra space that we could get from shrinking the conventional handbrake to a button.
    5. One-Touch Cruise Control - Setting cruise speed is just one click away. Conventionally we have to click 2-3 times to set the cruise control.
    6. The Little Things (that 'could/could not' matter) - More connected car voice commands. Puddle lamps that 'could be' useful if we have parked the car in a dark environment with no lights whatsoever. Rear seat headrest cushions. Twin tip exhaust.
    7. Little cheaper (Introductory Price) - With the Creta prices being officially out we can see that it is 20k cheaper for the top end, but these are introductory prices and this will go up in a few months.

Why I think the Seltos is still better than the Creta and the reasons why we went on with our booking of the Seltos GTX+ D-AT.

    1. Unwanted features - Twin exhaust tips do nothing in the driving dynamics and contrastingly it could look out of place on a luxury-oriented non-sporty design of the Creta. Rear seat headrest cushions, puddle lamps could be easily added to any vehicle without spending much.
    2. Skeptical about Electric handbrake - And electric handbrake won't work the same way as a normal handbrake, and can potentially turn out to be dangerous even. This is something that I wanted to avoid at all costs.
    3. We don't like sunroofs - Sunroofs are by far the most overrated show-off feature in any car. If possible we would have avoided the sunroof on our GTX+ Seltos but sadly there is no such option. If we open it, dust and other particles could easily get between the metal sheet and the glass and after a while, this could make way for leaks. Also, it will be an expensive repair once something goes wrong with it.
    4. There is no other way to describe what I feel about it but to my eyes, the New 2020 Creta looks hideous
    5. The only thing that I wish the Seltos had that the new Creta has is the paddle shifters, but this one feature was not enough for me to cancel my Seltos booking.
